Dr Helen Roberts is a small and exotic animal veterinarian and is also one of the few veterinarians in the country who treats pet fish. She received her veterinary degree from the University of Georgia where she met the “grandfather” of pet fish medicine, Dr Jack Gratzek. Growing up, Helen was not only exposed to the joys of raising fish and competing in tropical fish shows but also explored fishing, visiting fish hatcheries, public aquariums, and various lakes, streams, rivers, and other bodies of water. It is not surprising this enjoyment and respect for fish was added to her love for animals and veterinary medicine.
Dr Roberts is very active in her profession and is a frequent speaker on aquatic animal medicine both nationally and internationally at veterinary conferences. She has also taught veterinarians, veterinary students and veterinary technician students aquatic animal medical procedures, diagnostic techniques, and surgery in many wet labs. Helen has also published several articles on pet fish health in professional journals. "Fundamentals of Ornamental Fish Health" is a book which she edited and wrote several chapters for. The book is available on Amazon.com or direct from the publisher at http://www.wiley.com/WileyCDA/WileyTitle/productCd-0813814014.html.
Helen is also a consultant and instructor for Veterinary Information Network (VIN) in the aquatic medicine department and also teaches several online courses (zoonotic diseases and pharmacology) for VetMedTeam to veterinary technicians.
Dr Roberts is a founding member of the World Aquatic Veterinary Medical Association and has also served as a member on the American Veterinary Medical Association’s Aquatic Veterinary Medicine Committee. She also served as Chairman and Vice-Chairman on this committee. Helen is also a past president of the Niagara Frontier Veterinary Society and past Executive Board member of the Western New York Veterinary Medical Association.
In addition to her professional activities, Dr Roberts is very active in her community. She volunteers with the Erie County Health Department with the free rabies clinics offered several times annually and is a member of the local specialized medical assistance response team (SMART). Dr Roberts also worked with many other volunteers with the Flight 3407 disaster response efforts.
Dr Roberts lives in Lancaster with her family, two koi ponds and her two “micro-dogs”, Gryphon and Phoenix. If you have a problem with a fish, feel free to call 5 Corners Animal Hospital at 716-677-4477. Fish with problems can be transported to 5 Corners Animal Hospital for a consultation and exam with Dr Roberts or if that is not convenient, she has a local ambulatory practice for private house and pond calls. Some clients have traveled over six hours with their sick fish to see her.
