Questions to ask when comparing prices for an ovariohysterectomy (spay) or neuter:

  1. Does the practice use a separate sterilized surgical pack for each patient (or are the packs used on multiple patients)? Are individual sterile suture packs used for the stitches?

  1. Is the animal intubated (a tube placed in the trachea/airway) or masked for the procedure?  Does the animal receive a gas anesthetic or only injectable anesthetic?

  1. Is an intravenous catheter placed prior to surgery for delivery of intravenous fluids and, if needed, quick administration of emergency drugs during surgery? Are IV fluids given during the procedure to help maintain desired blood pressure?

  1. Are baseline blood tests offered or required prior to surgery?

  1. Does a veterinary technician stay with the patient during the entire procedure or do they “pop in and out” as needed?

  1. Is an exam required prior to surgery?

  1. Is the blood pressure monitored during surgery?  Are the heart rate and blood oxygen concentration monitored continuously during surgery?

  1. Is pain medication sent home after the procedure?  Is there a local anesthetic block used to reduce incisional pain? Is pain medication given prior to anesthesia?

  1. Are vaccinations required to be current?

  1. Are you called the following day for a follow-up ?

  1. Is the surgery table heated to help maintain a safe body temperature throughout the procedure?
